Your guide to wedding invitation wording

You’ve set the date, booked the hall and have confirmed everyone is free with those cute save the date cards. Now it’s time to get down to the exciting part, cracking on with writing the proper invitations.

You want your invitations to look good, but you also need them to convey all the right information. So, here’s our handy guide to wording for wedding invitations – you can thank us later:

First you need to decide who is ‘hosting’ your wedding. If your parents are playing a big part in the organisation (which translates to paying for things) then they should really be noted on the invitations as the hosts.

Here’s an example of how to word this:

Mr and Mrs John B. Smith (bride’s parents first)
and Mr and Mrs Gary L. Jones (groom’s parents)
Request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their children
Sarah Louise Smith
And
James Thomas Jones

If you’re arranging a more casual affair, here is another version to consider:

John and Mary Smith
And Gary and Rachel Jones
Invite you to the wedding of their children
Sarah Louise Smith
And
James Thomas Jones

This can be amended as you see fit to include either just one set of parents or just the bride and groom’s names.

Once that part is complete you then need to add:

  • The date
  • Time
  • The venues (if the guest is invited to both the ceremony and the reception include both)
  • RSVP address
  • Reply date

This is an invitation in its most basic form but many couples like to include extra details along with the main invitation, such as:

  •  A particular dress code
  •  Whether children are invited
  •  Information on booking a hotel for out of town guests
  •  Travel information
  •  A gift list

It’s also a good idea to ensure your font is legible and that everything is checked thoroughly for spelling and grammar.

And that’s it! Wording for wedding invitations isn’t as confusing as you might have initially thought, is it? Keep things short, sweet and precise and have a great time on the day when everyone arrives at the correct time and place!

We hope you find it useful.
